Bubie’s Orchid

“Bubie’s Orchid” is a print I made in March 2024, just after the death of my grandmother, who I called Bubie— Yiddish for “grandmother”. The English spelling varies, but the way I write it now was how my grandmother always signed cards. The design is based on an orchid that I bought after I returned to school from the funeral. I picked it because my grandmother loved orchids. My grandparents’ house, the house my dad and his siblings grew up in, had a bay window that was always lined with orchids. My grandmother had a special gift with orchids, a talent for keeping the notoriously tricky plants alive that I don’t seem to have inherited.
